Twinsburg, Ohio – September 18, 2002 – R&D Magazine announced that Hitachi’s new ETG-100 Optical Topography system is one of this year’s winners of the prestigious R&D 100 Award. This award is given to the top 100 inventions of the year.
Among the R&D 100 Award winners of years past are breakthroughs like Polacolor film, the digital wristwatch, antilock brakes, the automated teller machine, the liquid crystal display, the halogen lamp, the fax machine, the touch-sensitive screen, the Kodak Photo CD, the Nicoderm anti-smoking patch, taxol anti-cancer drug and high-definition television. Hitachi was a previous R&D Award winner in 1989 for Open MRI.
The Chicago Tribune has called the R&D 100 Awards "The Oscars of Invention." Others have referred to the awards as "the Nobel Prizes of applied research." This year’s competition proved no exception.
Representatives from Hitachi Medical Systems America, Inc. (HMSA) will accept the award on behalf of Hitachi at the 40th annual R&D 100 awards ceremony in Chicago, Illinois on October 16, 2002.
Hitachi Medical Systems America, Inc. markets advanced medical imaging products to meet a variety of healthcare needs, including premium, high performance magnetic resonance imaging products of Hitachi Medical Corporation, Tokyo, Japan. HMSA has established a leadership position in Open MR imaging with more than 1,200 systems installed throughout the United States and over 2,300 worldwide.
Optical Topography, which non-invasively measures the hemoglobin levels in the brain, is the newest addition to Hitachi’s line of products. In addition to Optical Topography and Open MRI, HMSA also markets Ultrasound, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and direct digital x-ray systems. Direct digital radiography has become the accepted standard in the high throughput x-ray sector and, through a relationship with Swissray, HMSA has assumed a market leadership position. For PET, HMSA has teamed-up with CPS Innovations, the market leader in developing dedicated clinical PET technology. And beginning October 1, HMSA will begin marketing Hitachi’s full line of Ultrasound products.
